Romans 14:11 – It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’”
“Everyone bends a knee to something,” Dr. Beam said during morning chapel at Johnson Bible College. “What do you bow down to?” That was nearly 25 years ago and I remember those words very clearly. Dr. Beam, a professor at Johnson, spoke rarely at chapel yet he often challenged the students in a way that some of the other professors seemed to miss. I remember so clearly another sermon he preached on fantasy and lust. His words were plain, simple, and too the point. And he had his facts, illustrations, and references all in order too.
The truth is that everyone… and I mean everyone…bows to something. Some may bow to the bottle, drugs, or other habitual problems and abuses. Others may bow to power and greed. Some people bow to other people. Some of us bow to food and fattening deserts. Some bow to themselves as they sit on the throne of their lives. And others bow to false gods and self-serving religious leaders.
The question that Dr. Beam put to us still stands, “Who do you bow down to?”
I talked to a person the other day who had a dangerous fascination with a rock star. He said it was just good fun. He would dress like him. He would talk like him. And he even quoted him. He knew from his “tweets” what the man had for breakfast that day (really)! He even knew what the man felt about religion. So we began to talk about that and I was surprised to find that this young man was starting to buy into his beliefs as well.
“All religions have a bit of truth in them,” he said. I told him that I agreed. Most religions have a “bit” of truth to them. There is enough truth in them that they can believe what they want. But Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the father except by me.” Other religions may have a bit of truth in them but Jesus is 100% truth. Which are you going to buy.
My mother in law used to make ham salad out of bologna because it was cheaper and they had to stretch that dime to make the preacher’s salary go farther. It looks like ham salad, smells like ham salad. But it is not. It is full of bologna! I didn’t care for it. But the more I had it the more I grew a taste for it. Doy you see where we are going with this? If you eat enough bologna you will start to believe it’s ham salad!
My desire is only to bend a knee to Jesus. I must admit that I still have some junk in the closet that I am going through and throwing out. I want Jesus to sit on the throne of my life. I want him to rule the kingdom.
Dear God, I worship and praise you with all my heart. I praise you for your Son, Jesus, who has brought me to you through his blood and his truth. I ask that you help me to clean the half-truths and false gods out of my closets and rely totally and completely on you, O my Lord. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
“You never find yourself until you face the truth”
