Psalm 46:11 – The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Sometimes it is easy to get lost and feel like you are alone. It has been hard on my wife and I since the move to the mountains because we have left our children and grandchild hundreds of miles away. It helps to have each other and the church family close by but the hurt of the empty nest is difficult.
I sometimes feel alone in my weight loss journey. Yesterday, I took Wendy to the doctor, and on the way home she asked if I would drive-thru McDonald’s. I must admit that I didn’t want too. I am trying to watch my weight and McDonald’s french fries are about a third of my points for the day…not a wise investment. The rest of the way home I had to force myself to think of anything other than the smell of those golden, salty fries. I felt alone at that moment.
Sometimes we feel alone in our walk with the Lord too. It’s not self-piety to look around you and feel like no one else is trying to follow Jesus. It’s more like self-pity. It’s hard to do what is right when the rest of the world is doing whatever it feels like doing. Perhaps that is what Noah felt as he put that big boat together. That might be what he felt like after the rain started flooding the earth. That must of been what he felt like when he got drunk after the land dried out.
Being alone stinks. It’s hard to get anything done. For some we plow into our routine and go through the motions. For others, they self-medicate. Some people give up and go with the tides.
God knew it stinks to be alone when he created Adam and he said, “let us make a help-mate for man for it is not good for him to be alone.” Loneliness can cause you to talk to a volleyball named “Wilson”. Loneliness can make you a lady with 104 cats in one apartment. Loneliness can make a mess of everything in your life.
BUT YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
The greatest part of Psalm 46 is when God tells us to be still and know that he is God. But the second part is just as good. He says, “The Lord almighty is with us…” You are not alone. You are not alone. You Are Not Alone! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!
My mother was struggling when my father had cancer. She was afraid to lose him. She didn’t know what else to do but pray. She asked God for a sign of his presence, one that was unmistakably Him. She asked for a sign that she was not alone. That day a peacock came and stayed in her backyard for about a week. Peacocks aren’t wild where Mom lives. It was undeniably a sign for mom that she was not alone. Dad made it through that terrible time and Mom found her strength in God.
I find comfort in that. Just as God raised up a school of prophets to help Elijah and to take his place, God can raise up help and peace for us. He can help us to do whatever task needs to be done. He is the cure to empty-nest. He is a presence and strength for my weight loss journey. He is my rock in my Christian walk.
Dear Lord Almighty, The God of Jacob, I praise you for recognizing my loneliness and showing me that I am never completely alone. You are there. You are strength. You are peace and comfort. You give your love so freely and assure me that you are there. Like a peacock spreading it’s feathers. Beautiful God, Lord, Almighty. I love you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone and solitude expresses the glory of being alone.”
“All men’s misfortunes spring from their hatred of being alone.”
