Ecclesiastes 7:11 – Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun.
Today I go from preaching to meddlin’. I was in a grocery store the other day when I notice family doing some shopping. Sometimes I notice people who are overweight because I was really big at one time too. I usually have compassion on them. Sometimes when I see children who are overweight I even stop to say a prayer for them because I know the problems that they face socially, physically, and emotionally.
I did not mean to stare although I must confess that I am a people watcher and people fascinate me at times. This family was shopping together which I like. I think a family needs to do things together and shopping is a great way for kids to learn finances, budgeting, and discipline.
The problem was that there was no discipline at all with this family. The kids were putting things in the cart left and right. Most of the stuff was junk. When my children tried to put something in the cart without asking they would get scolded. They needed to ask and sometimes the answer was yes and some times it was no.
Dad and Mom were doing the same thing. But when mom put a can of vegetables in the cart the father said to her, “What is this for? You know I don’t like vegetables.” And Mom put the can back without saying a word.
The cart was filled with hamburger helper, spaghetti noddles and sauce, sugary cereals, snack cakes, cookies, and luncheon meats. The only half-healthy thing in their cart was yogurt. And I shook my head.
Please don’t think I am trying to gossip or be judgmental. I shook my head because I felt sorry for both the parents and the kids. They were all suffering for their bad eating habits and lack of exercise. And I thought of what these kids would inherit from their parents and what the parents had inherited from their parents.
The health problems in our country are largely caused by the artificial colors and flavorings, excess sugar, unhealthy fats, carbohydrates, excessive salt, additives, and preservatives in our processed foods. These cause heart problems, diabetes, muscular deterioration, and even brain damage. This is the inheritance that our children are getting from us when we choices to make poor choices at the grocery.
I do not advocate our government making laws and rules limiting our choices and our freedoms. I DO advocate using good sense and self-discipline in the market. I believe that we need to help train our kids as to making good choices in the supermarket and on our dinner tables. Good choices and moderation in our portions will go a long way toward a inheritance of good health and wiser society.
Dear God, I thank you for the freedoms that I have to make choices and think wisely. I thank you for wisdom that comes from above. I praise you for helping me with my weight loss journey. Give me the wisdom and ability to help people and to model your will and way in my life. I praise you for the hope of eternal salvation that comes through Jesus Christ, my Lord. It is in his name that I pray this prayer. Amen.
