In His Light – Psalm 118:27

Psalm 118:27-The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.

Charlene had been quiet as she made her way out to the kitchen. She carefully made her way through the minefield of toys scatter down the hall. One step on a rubber duck and her goose was cooked. She stealthily made her way to the refrigerator so as not to wake her husband, Bill, or the kids. She had this hunger that she needed to fill. Charlene had decided that she was going to cheat on her diet and find something good to eat in the fridge.

As she opened the door to the refrigerator the light cast some eerie shadows on the wall. She followed the shadow with her eyes over to the table and she jumped. There, illuminated by the light of the appliance, was her husband, mouth opened, sandwich in hand, frozen in the act of taking a bite. At first she was embarrassed and then they both laughed. They were both “caught in the act”.

It is amazing what the darkness can bring into our lives. I have to admit that my hunger burns strongest at night. I have theories as to why that happens but I don’t really know. All I know is that it is easier to cheat when it is dark. It is easier to sneak something when no one is watching. It is so much simpler to wait until everyone is in bed and then let the beast out to play.

But then the light of the morning comes and it is filled with regret, anger, and frustration. Why do I do it? Why do I let myself hide in the darkness?

I have found a secret that helps. Stay in the light. Never let it get dark!

Seriously, I have found that when you stay in the light of Jesus Christ, God’s spirit fills you. When I am having desires to eat at night I simply hit the word of God and feed on his word instead of feeding on leftovers and sinfully delicious treats. The next morning, instead of regret, I am filled with his Spirit and ready to take on new challenges in his kingdom.

The Apostle John tells us, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin,” (1 John 1:5-7). There are advantages to being in the light with God!

This works for other areas of you Christian life as well. Deeds done in darkness are often evil.

The Apostle John says this about Jesus in John 3:19-21: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

Stay in the light. Don’t let darkness draw you into sin.

Dear God in heaven, I praise you for the light. I praise you for the protection and the benefits that come from standing in your glory, your holy light. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and with the Word. Thank you for this day and the opportunities it brings. I pray this in the precious and wonderful name of Jesus, Amen.

Here I am to Worship
Songwriters: Michael W. Smith, Debbie Smith, Paul Baloche

Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes and let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You

Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
Altogether lovely, altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

King of all days, oh so highly exalted
You’re glorious in heaven above, yes You are
Humbly You came to this Earth You created
All for love’s sake became poor

Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
Altogether lovely, altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

I’ll never know how much it cost
To see my sin up on that cross
I’ll never know how much it cost
To see my sin up on that cross

Here I am, here I am to worship You
Here I am to worship You
Help me sing

Here I am to worship You
Here I am to worship You
Here I am, here I am

Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
Altogether lovely, altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
Altogether lovely, altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

Wonderful to me, You’re wonderful to me
You’re lovely and You are worthy
Say, say wonderful, wonderful

Here I am to worship
Here I am to worship
Here I am to worship
Here I am to worship
