Gentle Rivers – Isaiah 48:18

Isaiah 48:18 NLT – Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.

As we drove down the curving road through the canyon, I enjoyed watching the stream beside me as I went. How peaceful the waters looked. I begin to wonder how cold that water must be this time of year. As I kept looking at the gentle water my wife had to gently remind me to watch the road!

How is it that we always do things the hard way? Why do we insist on the turbulent waters of a messed-up world over the gentle and peaceful waters that could carry us through life if we would just listen to God?

My thoughts went to the lazy river at the water park we went to a few years ago. When the park opened I grabbed my tube and jumped into the water. The waters gently took me around the pool. It was peaceful, calm, and relaxing. I don’t know how many times I went around. I could have stayed there all day.

Then the unthinkable happened. One of the water slides broke down and they turned it off. Then the kids started getting in the lazy river and instead of following the rules they were turning over rafts, screaming, splashing, and throwing things at everyone. Before I knew it the tranquility was gone and the moment ruined. I got out and began looking for the family.

God says that if we listen to his commands we will have peace that flows like a gentle river and righteousness rolling like waves in the sea. Isn’t that a wonderful thought.

When I started my weight loss plan I followed it carefully. But after a while I thought I could make some tweeks and modifications. I drifted further away from the plans design and soon I found myself in rough seas. I wasn’t losing weight. In fact, I was gaining weight. I had to make a decision to keep doing what I was doing and not making progress or get back on the plan. Guess what I decided?

Let’s listen and obey.

Dear God, I want to thank you for your word and your commands. They are like an owner’s manual for our lives. When we read and obey everything works properly. When we don’t obey we find that we are in turbulent waters where nothing works right. Help me to follow your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

“When we learn to say a deep, passionate yes to the things that really matter… then peace begins to settle onto our lives like golden sunlight sifting to a forest floor.”
-Thomas Kinkade

“The true follower of Christ will not ask, ‘If I embrace this truth, what will it cost me?’ Rather he will say, ‘This is truth. God help me to walk in it, let come what may!'”
-A. W. Tozer
