Teaching in Song – Colossians 3:16

Colossians 3:16 – Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

I cannot emphasize the power of a song. I have use songs over and over again to memorize scripture, inspire myself and others, and to resist temptation. There is nothing like a song to get your feet tapping and soul on the right path. Perhaps that is why that the Apostle Paul talked about teaching and sharing through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs as we sing to God with a grateful heart.

Today I was listening to K-love in the car when “Steal My Show” by Toby Mac came on the radio. KJ (Little Man), who is 4 years old, was sitting in the back seat of the car, playing video games, and ignoring the world. When the chorus came on he began singing the song. I had to smile. We were taking KJ home and I was going to miss him.

Little Man has been with us all week. He is my grandson. He had lived with us for most of his life and recently moved in with his mother. Although it is a good thing, It is still hard sometimes because he has been such a big part of my life. Attending him has kept me sane even when my world seemed to be in turmoil. So I have cherished this week with him. His grandmother has spoiled him and I have tickled him, teased him, jumped off the mountain with him, and took him sledding. We have had a snowball fight, sword fight, tickle fight, and wrestled (What can I say, he is 100% pure boy).

I call him “Little Man” because every once in a while I will slip and call him my old nickname for him. Since he was a born, I have called him “Boo-baby”. When I slip up he promptly says, “I am not a baby”. “No, you are not. You are my little man,” I reply.

So I helped Little Man get into the truck and ride off. I got in the car and started to cry. It is amazing how love can effect you so. I missed him and he wasn’t even a block away yet.

Toby Mac’s song reminded me that it really isn’t my show. God is in charge. As much as I want to be there for every minute of his life I have to be willing to let him go and understand and trust God to take care of Little Man. God has taken good care of me over the years and I know that he can do a better job than I ever could of taking care of KJ.

The truth of the matter is that if we hold on to things too tightly we will face heartbreak and disappointment over and over again. We have to let God “steal the show”. We have to be willing to surrender all to Jesus.

It is true with everything we do. It is especially true with our weight loss journey.

I was talking to a man the other day that said he wanted to lose about 50 pounds. Almost after the words were out of his mouth he began to list all the things he would not give up to do so. He also started poo-pooing the idea of exercising. I told him that I would try to help but there isn’t much anyone can do until you are ready to surrender all.

Dear God, Thanks for KJ and all that he means to me. Thank you for reminding me in song that I need to let you “steal my show”. You are the greatest. I love you and I trust you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

STEAL MY SHOW
by Toby Mac

Another cold night another late flight it’s almost show time and diverse
Citys waiting on me we got a Packed house the crowd is calling out they
Want the beat to drop but what we really need is you

If you wanna steal my show I’ll sit back and watch you go if you got
Something to say go on and take it away need you to steal my show can’t
Wait to watch you go-oh-oh-oh so take it away

So now the crowd is hyped that you showed up tonight anticipating craving
Something more than smoke and lights so I’ll Step out the way I’ll give you
Center stage alright spotlight give’em what they came for

If you wanna steal my show I’ll sit back and watch you go if you fat
Something to say go on and take away need to steal my show can’t wait to
Watch you go-oh-oh-oh so take it away

When you arrive we come to life our hearts collide they’re beating in the
Same time you’re coming through all eyes on you our hearts collide they’re
Beating in the same time beating the same time

No matter who we are notated what we do everyday we can choose to say

If you wanna steal my show I’ll sit back and watch you go if you got
Something to say go on and take it away need you to stealy show can’t wait
To watch you go-oh-oh-oh so take it away

It’s you I wanna live for
