Love on Tap – Psalm 136:1

Psalm 136:1 – Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

I was a little nervous when I went on my Emmaus Walk a few years ago. We had to give up our cell-phones, watches, and all our ties with the outside world. But what worried me the most was having to bear my soul during our group time. I was afraid to share my weaknesses with other men. But one of the leaders told me that it was like “having God’s love on tap”. And sure enough, before the weekend was over we were laughing, crying, and sharing our deepest secrets with each other and God. It was scary but liberating. And we all felt God’s love in a real and powerful way.

David praised God for his steady, unending love. It is hard to explain to someone who has never experienced it before. His love envelopes us like a big comfy blanket. For most men, this emotional touchy-feely thing is unappealing, at first. We don’t know how to react to it and to each other. We men may be a bit emotionally detached. It could be our genes or it could be that we were taught that “big boys don’t cry.” But if we give his love a try it can be life changing.

This emotional detachment can impede our spiritual walk with the Lord. It can even effect any weight loss efforts we try because we try to do it on our own instead of sharing the journey with other men. When we do open up with other men it can become more of a competition than sharing for mutual benefit. Sometimes this emotional detachment keeps us from getting involved with a weight loss group because the perception is that it is more of something for women than men.

Francis Chan writes about this love of God in his book, “Crazy Love”. He talks about how the God of Universe has poured out a a radical, unconditional, ever-lasting, self-sacrificing love. And our response to this love is to try to “be good” and go to church. But God has called us to take this love and get a little crazy ourselves.

I first read this book after a hurricane when the power was out for several days. I couldn’t hardly put it down. It changed the way I looked at my family, friends, and even those people who I don’t like.

I had to admit that even though I was called to “love others” there were a lot of people I really didn’t like. I even joked that the ministry wouldn’t be too bad of a job if it weren’t for the people. I once told someone that I didn’t like them but I loved them through Jesus. There were some people who really try my patience. There are others who make me feel uncomfortable. There are some that make me angry. And then there are those who are so indifferent that it makes me feel indifferent. I am ashamed that I have not loved others the same way that God loves me.

What is so crazy about God’s love is that he loves everyone, even me, unconditionally. He loves us so much that he gave his Son up to die for our sins. And He raised Jesus from the dead to show us that there is victory in Jesus. God’s love is so radical and crazy that there is nothing that can separate us from his love. NOTHING!

On this fourth day of November, I am grateful to God for the opportunity to share his crazy love with others. It is this love in my life that makes it easier to reach the unreachable, love the unlovable, and to be comfortable in reaching and sharing with everyone.

Dear God, Thank you for the opportunities to serve you and share your love with others. You have taken me out of my comfort zone and showed me how to be loved and to love others. I am eternally grateful for your love. I pray this in the authority and power of Jesus’ name, Amen.

Crazy Love
Sung By Hawk Nelson

We’re the ones who believe in the things unseen
This home, this body is the in-between
We’re the ones who fight down on our knees
Who dare to love our enemies, love enemies

They say it sounds insane, we say that we’ve been changed
By the power of crazy love
This world, it looks at us like we’re ridiculous
Maybe it’s all because of crazy love

We’re the ones gonna put it all in reverse
Gonna die to ourselves, gonna live to serve
‘Cause when you get what you get when you walk by faith
Is it really so dumb to give it all away? Give it all away

They say it sounds insane, we say that we’ve been changed
By the power of crazy love
This world, it looks at us like we’re ridiculous
Maybe it’s all because of crazy love

Crazy love

We know it sounds absurd, we don’t get what we deserve
It’s by grace we are saved

They say it sounds insane, we say that we’ve been changed
By the power of crazy love
This world, it looks at us like we’re ridiculous
Maybe it’s all because of crazy love

Crazy love

We’re the ones who believe in the things unseen
This home, this body is the in-between
(Crazy love)
We’re the ones who fight down on our knees
Who dare to love our enemies

We’re the ones gonna put it all in reverse
Gonna die to ourselves, gonna live to serve

Crazy love
